The Tiguan is a mid-level SUV but can handle some reasonably rough off-road terrain as I discovered recently driving around Hole In the Wall in the Transkei. VW base price in general is misleading as to get a reasonably specced vehicle you have to pay extra for the adds-ons. Boot space is also reasonably limited, but that said it is an extremely comfortable and accomplished car to drive. Fuel consumption on the open road if you are prepared to drive at or below the legal limit can be as low as 5l/100km. Visibility when stopped at a stop street can be hampered by the broad strips between the front and back windows so extra care is required. Another drawback - no USB port :(
